Missouri was named after the Missouri Siouan Indian tribe. Missouri was the 24th state admitted to the United States. The state's nickname is the “Show-Me State,” first recorded in 1894. Missouri's border physically touches a total of eight different states which are Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. The per capita personal income in 2003 was $29,464, 27th in the nation. Major industries include aerospace, transportation equipment, food processing, chemicals, printing/publishing, electrical equipment, light manufacturing, and beer. The agriculture products of the state are beef, soybeans, pork, dairy products, hay, corn, poultry, and eggs. |
